For wildlife observation we highly recommend a motorboat tour along the lower part of the Sarapiqui River and the Puerto Viejo River where you will have a great opportunity to observe a great variety of birds, reptiles, monkeys, iguanas, and much more. Tours generally last 2 hours.
The tour is offered by the Rural Community Tourism Association The heroes Route (ATURUH in Spanish) which was formed to bring attention to the importance culturally and historically of the Sarapiqui River.
■ The boat tours leave from the main dock (Muelle Publico) in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui.
■ By car, from Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat, it takes 5 minutos to get to Puerto Viejo.
■ It is also easy to get there by bus, catching the bus out front of the Retreat on the main road (on the corner on your right hand side) which will take you to the main terminal in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui where you can take a short walk towards the Muelle Publico (when you leave the terminal take a left and then a right when you come to the Banco Nacional, the dock is at the end of that road and the office for ATURUH is just to the right of the dock in a pink house with nature scenes painted on it).
■ Round trip taxi ride is about $15.
