Trails in our Private Reserve Chilamate Jungle

Given the location of the Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat and the private reserve Chilamate Jungle, in the heart of the San Juan la Selva Biological Corridor, a key piece of the larger Meso- American Biological Corridor, and the proximity to the la Selva Biological Station and Braulio Carrillo National Park, it is very easy to appreciate a wide biodiversity of species including animals such as monkeys, armadillos, pacas, a great variety of bird, amphibians insects, and much more.

Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat has a private reserve of 20 hectares of rainforest with around 6km of trails, some of which are appropriate for self-guided walks. There is no charge for Retreat guests to walk in our traIls at any time.

We highly recommend you explore the area with a naturalist guide and we are happy to organize a private tour for you through the reserve for $30 per person for a two hour excursion. Tours can be organized for early morning: starting at 5:30 or 6am, mid morning: starting at 8 or 8:30am or late afternoon or evening (times are flexible). Please make sure to enquire in our reception so we can make sure to book our favorite local guide for you.

Retreat owner Meghan is an active forest therapy guide and we are also happy to organize a three hour forest therapy session for $40 per person, permitting that she has availability, please request in advance.

It is very easy to appreciate the incredible biodiversity around the Retreat including animals such as monkeys, sloths, kinkajous, a great variety of birds, beautifully colored poison dart frogs and other amphibians, stick bugs, mantis and other amazing insects, and much more, given the location of the Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat and the private reserve Chilamate Jungle, in the heart of the San Juan la Selva Biological Corridor, a key piece of the larger Meso- American Biological Corridor and also the reserve’s proximity to the la Selva Biological Station and Braulio Carrillo National Park.

There is no cost to use the trails for self guided walks for our guests. If you are not staying at the reserve but would like to do a self guided walk the cost is $10 per person. Please do let us know when you enter the reserve and when you plan on coming back. We have rubber boots available for your use, please ask at reception. Close-toed shoes are mandatory on the trails.
