Sarapiqui River School

With volunteer support the Retreat has been able to offer courses and workshops in the community. They are always looking for motivated international kayakers willing to exchange their time instructing local youth on the river for room and board at the Retreat.

The Sarapiqui River School first started taking shape when Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat owners Davis Azofeifa and Meghan Casey began collecting used kayak gear to lend to local at-risk youth.
Kids in the Sarapiqui area grow up watching tourists enjoy rafting and kayaking and they rarely have the chance to try the sport for themselves, let alone get their hands on gear to practice!

In 2011, both World Class Kayak Academy and Esprit Whitewater`s Wild program came to stay with Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat and many students sold their used gear to the Retreat at discounted prices, which since then, Davis and Meghan have been lending to motivated local kids.

Please contact edu@chilamaterainforest.com for more information. A high level of kayak experience and whitewater rescue training is necessary and ideally a good base of Spanish. Of course material donations of used equipment are always needed as are financial donations, and the Retreat is open to exchanging your generosity for a great discount on lodging or meals at the Retreat.
